Question: My ex and i have a history of domestic violence. He is about to be released from prision in 3 weeks. what steps should i take to file for custody of our5yr old son?

Answer: To start a file for custody you may want to go to the Superior court and see if they have a packet of forms and information on filing for custody. You can also go to https://www.superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/SuperiorCourt/Self-ServiceCenter/Forms/FamilyCourt/index.asp and download the forms and information for Maricopa County. Pima County also has a self-service desk with forms. If you are outside these counties, you may use these forms for your county. Follow the directions and take to the superior court to file. You may want to consult with an attorney for legal advice.

You may also want to consider filing for an order of protection to protect both you and your son if you have not done so already. You can do this by visiting your local Municipal or Justice Court.
