questions & answers

Question: If someone has been claiming on tax forms another person who is cohabitating with them, who is responsible and for what?

Answer: The IRS has an online interview that will determine who a person can claim as a dependent.
To complete this interview go to: https://www.irs.gov/uac/Who-Can-I-Claim-as-a-Dependent%3F

Generally the person who is claiming the other person as a dependent is responsible for supporting that person financially. There are other requirements for non-relatives as well.

Here is a link to a module created by the IRS that provides more about dependents: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/mod_4_-_tax_tutorial.pdf
