Question: How can I avoid being solicited by telemarketers and marketing mail?

Answer:

You can register your telephone numbers (including your cell phone number) with the National Do-Not-Call Registry, which is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). To register, call 1-888-382-1222 or visit DoNotCall on-line. You can also ask telemarketers to put you on their “do not call” lists. If they keep calling you, report them to the FTC. For more information about the Federal Trade Commission and consumer protections, visit the FTC on-line.

In addition, tell businesses not to sell your name to other companies. To remove your name from telephone and mailing lists, write to the Direct Marketing Association Inc. at the addresses listed below. You may also visit the Direct Marketing Association on-line to register and get more information about how the service works. You can remove your e-mail address from e-mail marketing lists. The service is free, good for five years and offerred through DMA on-line.

You can also “opt out” of the credit agencies’ pre-approved credit offer mailing lists. Simply call (888) 5-OPTOUT (888-567-8688) or visit OptOut online.
