Debt Collection, Garnishment, Repossession
questions & answers
Question: Can they take my federal income tax money to satisfy the debt?
Answer: It depends on the type of debt. Generally, a federal income tax refund can be garnished to pay a federal debt (i.e. federal taxes owed, a debt owed to a different federal agency, for federal student loans, etc) or for child support arrears. Typically, creditors of private debts cannot collect directly from the IRS.
