Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities
questions & answers
Question: I have a roommate that is threatening to sue me. If he does, what can I do to protect myself as I am already having financial difficulties?
Answer: The best way to prepare to defend yourself from a potential lawsuit – in addition to meeting all your legal obligations toward the person who may take you to court – is to keep (or take time-stamped photos or video of) all potential physical evidence and maintain careful records of all your interactions and correspondence with that person so that you will be able to make a strong argument in your defense if the matter does end up in court. If you would like to know what your specific legal options are, you can always discuss the situation in detail with an attorney.
