Question: I was out on deployment when my vehicles safety inspection sticker expired and my truck got towed from my parking spot at home and was impounded. I never missed a payment and could not afford to pay the impound cost when i returned home from deployment and Navy Federal credit Union would do nothing to help me get my vehicle back. That was back in 2009 i believe, and Navy Federal Credit Union has been trying to collect the remaining $7000 on the loan from me which i do not have and have never had. i do not even have a job right now. What can be done about this? i feel cheated!
Answer: The Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act (SCRA) provides protections against civil judgements for active duty military. You should contact a military attorney to see if your SCRA rights have been violated. To find a military legal assistance office near you, go to http://legalassistance.law.af.mil/content/locator.php.
If you would like a private attorney please go to azbar.org, or contact our Legal Learn line at (866) 637-5341, to see if you qualify for a free consultation as part of the Military Assistance Program.
