Question: I've been in the US over a year and recently filed my tax in single statues, I m still married but separated already. when the tax person filing my tax she said I owe tax I said ok, then she filed it, I didn't know that I could say no and file for joint. now I have to pay my fund and want to know if I still could amend it and get my money back?

Answer: In most cases, the Internal Revenue Service permit taxpayers to amend their tax return by using form 1040X (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf). However, consulting a tax advisor would provide the most accurate information pertaining to a specific situation. This form, as well as detailed information on how to complete the form, can be found on the IRS.gov website (http://www.irs.gov/).  Answers to frequently asked questions regarding amending a federal income tax return may be found here (http://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Amended-Return-Frequently-Asked-Questions)
