Family Medical Leave Act

questions & answers

Question: I am a teacher who took FMLA leave for surgery. My principal said that I am not allowed on campus to attend a meeting concerning my schedule. Is this true? He also said that if I request a meeting, they cannot meet with me because of the FMLA guidelines. Is that true? It all sounds fishy. Why wouldn't my staff be allowed to answer my emails under FMLA?

Answer: You are given a 12 week maximum for the year under FMLA.  Usually if you return to work before the 12 weeks, you are required to refile.  You may want to consult with your school district regarding their policies - as they may consider attending a meeting as returning to work.  You can also contact the U.S. Dept. of Labor at www.dol.gov.
