Question: A relative who lives out of state supposely had unpaid bebt. we were called and told that we would be summomed on his behalf.. He lives in Illonis. can they do this?

Answer: Debt collectors may contact third parties, not associated with the debt, for limited information regarding the debtor. Unless you are a cosigner on the debt, it is unlikely for them to be able to hale a person other than the debtor into court.
