Name Change
questions & answers
Question: Why is it that I would be required to notify anyone I have had children with when I change my name?
Answer: Absent extraordinary circumstances, parents have certain rights with respect to their minor child/ren (i.e. knowing where the child/ren reside(s), how to get a hold of the other parent, etc.). Additionally, one parent may be entitled to child support from the other party. A name change could potentially impede the other parent's ability to find the parent who changes his or her name.
