Child Support

questions & answers

Question: My husband received a request from Child Support Enforcement to complete a Financial Affidavit. Why does the affidavit request information about income of other members of his household if Child support calculation cannot be based on it?

Answer:

Child Support Enforcement likely has several reasons for asking.  A few of those reasons may include the following:

1.  Sometimes, third parties (excluding spouses, and children) are living in the home with the person responsible to pay child support.  Those third parties may be paying rent to the responsible party.  If the person responsible for paying child support is receiving rental income from third parties, it may be appropriate to adjust the income of the responsible party to reflect the rent received.

2.  Also, if the person obligated to pay child support has additional children (natural or adopted) from a different relationship, the responsible party may be entitled to a credit or adjustment to his/her income for the support of those other children.
