Child Support
questions & answers
Question: I am on SSI and so is the father of my 6 month old son...However the father is in jail with his probation being revoked and also has never met his son. Would my son be eligible for any of his or my own SSI benefits for any kind of child support payment if I were to establish an order of paternity?
Answer:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people with little to no income, to help provide cash for basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Your SSI benefits cannot be garnished for child support payments. If you would like to know how to become a representative payee for your husband I encourage you to contact your local social security office. You may also go online to https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp to find one nearest you.
