Child Support

questions & answers

Question: If my daughter gets full time employment do I still have to pay childsupport?

Answer:

The following is provided for general information only. To find out how the law applies to a specific situation, contact an attorney directly.

Child support is determined by court order, therefore a determination cannot be made through AZLawHelp.  However, here is some information that may be generally useful.  According to A.R.S. 25-501, there is a duty to provide reasonable support for a child until the age of majority (18) or 19 if still in high school or a high school equivalency program.  Note that a court can order support to continue beyond that point, and a child reaching the age of majority does not eliminate the resposiblity to pay child support arrears (back-owed support).  A.R.S. 25-503 provides that child support may be modified if there is a showing of changed circumstances, that is substantial and continueing.  Information on child support, including a child support calculator, as well as self help forms are available online at the Arizona Courts website.  While a parent may petition for a child support modification, it should be noted that the income of the child is not factored into the child support calculator.
