Question: I have been legally married for 3 years, and have decided to take on my husband's last name. Do I still need to go through this process and court hearing? Or is there another route that can be taken?

Answer: There is no legal limit on the amount of time you have to change your name after marriage.  The important document you need is the original or a certified copy of your marriage certificate.  The first step is to take it to the Social Security Office and ask for a new Social Security Card and for your records to reflect your new name.  If the clerk is unhelpful, you can ask to speak with a supervisor.  Once you have the new card, the next step is to change your drivers license, passport, bank accounts, and any other legal documents.  A new Social Security card and the marriage certificate should be all you need.
