AHCCCS Medical Program Article

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS)

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) is Arizona’s version of Medicaid. (A.R.S. §§ 36-2901 et seq.)  AHCCCS provides health insurance to low income Arizonans through a health plan. Doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, etc. are included in the health plan to provide all AHCCCS covered services.

In addition to health plans, AHCCCS has several programs for seniors including:

  • Medicare Cost Sharing provides help with Medicare expenses
  • SSI Cash/Medical Assistance Only program provides medical coverage for seniors who do not receive monthly cash benefits under the Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI),
  • Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) which provides ongoing services at nursing facility level of care either at an individual’s home, assisted living facility or in a nursing home.
