Question: Is it legal for insurance companies to raise rates based on age?

Answer:

  • Many older Americans not yet on Medicare pay an average of six times the rate a younger person pays simply because of their age.
  • Starting January 1, 2014, an insurer can charge an older person no more than three times the rate of a younger person’s premiums.
